OBESITY
DEFINITION
A condition of excess body weight. May be defined as: Males over 20% body fat or females over 25% body fat are considered obese. The concept that obesity is a will-power or self-discipline problem is outmoded.
COMPLICATION
› Obesity increases the body's resistance to insulin and susceptibility to infection.
› It may contribute to the development of hypertension, heart disease, and gallbladder disease.
› Complications of pregnancy and liver damage.
› Psychosocial complications.
RECOMMENDATIONS
› Overall treatment goals will be individualized.
› Increase your current level of activity. 30 minutes of activity, 5 times a week should be the goal.
› Change your eating habits; Always eat breakfast, don't skip meals, and eat slowly.
› Stay away from saturated fat, processed grains, fast foods and diet and sugary sodas.
› Eat a high-fiber diet, plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy oils. Diets that are not nutritionally balanced can cause more problems than the obesity. Ironically, Poor nutrition may be an important factor in obesity.
