Anxiety Disorder
DEFINITION
A vague, uncomfortable feeling of fear, dread or danger from an unknown source. Generalized anxiety is defined as unrealistic or excessive anxiety for 6 months or longer. It is the most common mental health problem in the U.S. Females more than males, and mainly in adults ages 20~45.
COMPLICATION
› Impaired social and occupational functioning.
› A sudden increases in anxiety may lead to panic.
› Dependence on drugs.
› Heart arrhythmia.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Learn relaxation therapy to reduce muscle tension. Meditation can be very helpful.
Follow a regular energetic exercise. Most people notice an improvement after a few weeks.
Lifestyle changes to reduce stress. A body under stress is more vulnerable to free radical damage.
Eat a high-fiber diet, plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Avoid foods containing refined sugars, simple carbohydrates, or caffeine. Caffeine triggers anxiety, and sugars and processed foods might too. Try going wighout and take note of what happens to your mood.
Recreational drugs such as marijuana can cause anxiety attacks.
To help manage an acute attack, use breathing techniques.
Breathing Exercises: Train yourself to inhale slowly from your abdomen, rather than your chest, to help stop an attack and calm the system. Focus on thoughts that pull the mind out of its negative spiral and toward stillness.
